Analysis and Criticism of Literary Works

One thing many students are expected to do at some point, particularly those who are English and literary degree majors, is a literary analysis and critique of a historic literary work. Often times this literary analysis is performed on one or more of the plays by William Shakespeare, though the assignment could be on more contemporary works such as The Grapes of Wrath.

During a literary analysis and critique, the student judges many aspects of the work: the use of prose, plot construction, comparability to peer works, overall aesthetics, etc. To perform such literary analysis, the student must be familiar with the various aspects of literary analysis and critique. It is a natural requirement of literary analysis for the student to actually read the document. Too many students rely upon CliffsNotes or other such summarization publications.

The actual reading of the literary work allows the student to gain not only an understanding of the work in general, but to draw his or her own judgment regarding the aesthetics and effectiveness of the literary work for their analysis.

It is also helpful for the student to have read similar works from the same general time period (defined as within two decades before and after) from which the student may draw comparisons and contrasts. In preparing the analysis, particular attention should be paid to one or more specific aspects of the work: the handling of conflict or character development, for example. The details associated with the selected question distinguish an analysis from a review, making the basis of the analysis itself. The student must select specific examples from the literary work to support his or her viewpoint.

During the analysis, the student must also be cautious about simply quoting a passage and expecting its relevance to be understood. The student must elaborate on such matters to ensure the reader understands the significance of the particular quotation.
