Essays on Ecotopia Emerging

After writing the novel Ecotopia, Ernest Callenbach found himself under tremendous pressure to explain how a society like Ecotopia could emerge from our modern society.  Written a decade after Callenbach’s hit classic Ecotopia, Ecotopia Emerging steps back in time, showing the events which lead up to the fascinating society presented in Ecotopia.  Ecotopia Emerging shows how a mix of technological, environmental and social pressures could set the stage for the emergence of a new philosophy and fledgling society like Ecotopia.  With Ecotopia Emerging, Callenbach leads us down the path from civil discontent to all-out rebellion, establishing not only a realistic storyline leading us back to his first novel, but providing a veritable template for social change activists around the world.

Ecotopia Emerging starts out with the daughter of a talented architect pursuing her hobby of scientific exploration; more specifically, her attempts to perfect solar cell manufacturing.  In the first few pages, Ernest Callenbach shows that Ecotopia is not just a political movement, but one of sustainable development and healthy human psychology, including bucking the trends of thinking that were developing rapidly in the mid-eighties regarding teen sexuality.

Through the course of the novel, Callenbach paints a picture of determination as his characters fight not only for their own philosophies, but for the survival of all mankind, using a mix of emotional propaganda and irrefutable logic.  But when push comes to shove, Survivalists (as Callenbach’s theoretical political party came to call themselves) were just as capable of taking up arms and fighting.

  • In the opening chapters, one of the characters is revealed to be a musician in the process of writing a new protest song.  The chorus contains the lines “Step right up for your chemical swill, if a heart attack don’t kill you, then the cancer will.”  Discuss the meaning of this and how it plays into the later development of the “Cancer Commandos.”
  • The Survivalist Party (Callenbach’s theoretical political party) follows a strategy of shadowing political figures, offering alternative interpretations of speech materials from them at every opportunity.  It is not until much later that the Survivalists actually begin campaigning for offices.  Discuss Callenbach’s presentation of this and reflect on its significance in light of Benjamin Franklin’s commentary on changing society.

Novels written by futurists tend to require extensive thinking and analysis for students to prepare suitable essays and assignments regarding them.  With the limited time most students have in school, this can be a challenge.  Our professional writers understand this all too well and stand ready to assist you at a moment’s notice.  All we need is your order.

Essays on Nineteen Eighty-Four

In 1984, Apple computers ran an ad rekindling interest in a 1948 novel by George Orwell, the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair (June 25th, 1903 – January 21st, 1950). This novel, named after the year the events were supposed to happen, was “Nineteen Eighty-Four.” Nineteen Eighty-Four was a dystopian prediction dealing with the trends George Orwell believed were already happening to the western world in the 1940s and where those trends might lead after World War II.

The novel Nineteen Eighty-Four is filled with dark allusions to the dangers overly powerful governmental forces represent in the world and what corruption of governmental power can do to individuality and the rights individuals in the U.S. and Great Britain have relished for several generations.

Though Nineteen Eighty-Four makes no reference to specific time references, other than the year of its occurrence, several elements imply several decades have passed. Among these elements in Nineteen Eighty-Four are references to an atomic war, a popular revolution in which “the party” takes power, the extensive development of a society radically different than that of 1948, and references to the many years of aggression between Oceania and the two other world-controlling super powers.

  • Many argue that the environment described in Nineteen Eighty-Four has begun to materialize in our modern world with the development and implementation of the myriad of features described in the novel. What are these features, how have they materialized in our modern society, and what are the current and potential future effects of these features? What actions could we undertake to mitigate or eliminate these effects?
  • In the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell described the scenario of the United States becoming an aggressive imperialist power which seized control of most of the western world during an atomic war. How might such a scenario develop within the United States and are we currently on such a potential path? What might be done to prevent this from happening?

Though the environment in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four had not developed by that date, many argue that Orwell was right materially, just not temporally. Today, even the academic environment is beginning to show symptoms of the Orwellian prophecy with the use of services such as TurnItIn.com and other “anti-plagiarism” detection software. Students and many academic scholars are highly concerned about the oppressive effects such software can and is having on the creativity of students. Reports of punitive action being taken against students over false positives are already spreading across the Internet and news media, prompting not only protests within the academic environment, but in civil courts across the United States as well.

Our writers make every effort to avoid accusations of plagiarism, though this practice is not prevalent amongst many of our competitors. During an era that companies such as ours should be taking increased precautions, many unscrupulous writing “services” are supplying “essays” that are filled with undocumented references or, worse yet, are directly copied articles from magazines and other periodicals. Students need to engage ethical companies to supply their much-needed academic essays and reports. Yet the forest of such companies is thick, dark and dangerous, filled with predators that have little regard for the future of the students.
