Essays on Alternate Energy
Though today (November 3rd, 2008) gas prices are rapidly dropping to around $2 a gallon, the need to develop alternate energy and fuel sources remains high. Five years ago, during a conference of petroleum industry executives in Denver, Colorado, an executive disclosed to me concerns over our future oil supply, indicating she believed that “cheap” oil would come to an end in 20 years (approximately 15 more years from now). This expressed concern awoke me to the threat our industrialized society faces as we progress further into the new century.
Combining this threat with the growing evidence of the oil/gas-global warming connection, it is clear that we have little time to take appropriate action to ensure our society can continue. Debate on what direction we should go to achieve this is, to put it lightly, cutthroat. Even as the evidence becomes clear of our need to escape oil dependency, the oil industry continues to lobby our governments worldwide to block the development and deployment of alternate energy technologies, claiming they are not needed yet. But is it wise to wait to develop alternate energy technologies until they are already needed? Or should we plan ahead by developing the alternate energy technologies and manufacturing capacity for alternate energy technologies before they are actually needed?
-
Prepare an overview of alternate energy sources and development, describing each, its potential, and what obstacles there are to its deployment or expansion.
-
With the extreme political power of the oil industry and existing energy companies, how can citizens best overcome this power and push for alternate energy development?
-
What might happen to our society if we fail to be prepared with alternate energy sources if and when the available resources of oil and natural gas run out? How will life be without the oil-based luxuries and industries?
As our society delves deeper into energy-hungry technology, assuring a steady supply of that energy will no doubt require alternate energy sources. Just as students who are talent-starved in writing skills must turn to companies such as ours, we as a society must find those willing to do what it takes to get us ready for the end of “cheap” oil, regardless of the reaction of our politicians.
