In the Spirit of Shakespeare – Shakespearean Essays
Without exception, every student at one time or another is taught one or more of the plays by William Shakespeare. From the tragedy of Hamlet or the passion of Romeo and Juliette to the dynamics of the Merchant of Venice, Shakespearean plays shape much of our attitudes and inspire our emotions. At least an entire generation (probably much more) of playwrights has been inspired by his works, which reveal the raw human emotions that lurk within every man and woman.
Writing a Shakespearean Essay
When writing a Shakespearean essay, students often attempt to apply modern thinking and values to the events and contents of the plays. Even academic professionals frequently find themselves in this inappropriate paradox. I use the term paradox in that to understand Shakespearean plays, we must look not only at the play itself, but at the historic events which were occurring in England and Europe at the time the words were written.
Two examples could be why Romeo and Juliette insisted upon immediate marriage before being together, rather than simply engaging in a passing sexual encounter as many young people do today, or why Portia in the Merchant of Venice insisted upon honoring her deceased father’s wishes on how her husband was to be chosen, rather than choosing one on her own.
Many of Shakespeare’s plays reveal concepts of tradition and honorability, which seem archaic today, yet must be taken into account to understand the plays fully. This requires great effort on the part of the student-writer to comprehend the significance.
